WILD BILL WELLMAN RIDES AGAIN

William A. Wellman, whose 1927 epic thriller, “Wings,” flew off with the very first Best Picture Oscar, was one of the most vesrsatile and colorful directors of Hollywood's glory days. Which is why, beginning on February 10, you should try to catch as many as possible of the 42 Wellman films to be screened in a terrific series at New York's Film Forum. THEY SNARLED BY NIGHT

Barbara Stanwyck was top-billed in "Night Nurse," but newcomer Clark Gable also sizzled as the thug who bullied her after dark.

What that movie lacked was the dynamic charm of Ginger Rogers and the directorial smarts of William Wellman. named na
