WHAT IF HEPBURN HAD NEVER
MET TRACY?
Imagine
this: a minutely detailed tribute to Katharine Hepburn in which
the author describes many of her triumphs and even a failure or
two. Not only are her performances noted, but also the particular
chemistry she enjoyed with a variety of male stars, including John
Barrymore, Nick Nolte, Jason Robards, Humphrey Bogart and Burt Lancaster.
Now imagine that nowhere is there a mention of Spencer Tracy or
any of the nine films in which he and Hepburn displayed what was
surely the most remarkable chemistry of all (the first pairing,
"Woman of the Year," is shown above).
You don't really have to imagine all of this. You
can actually read Elvis Mitchell's article in The New York Times'
Arts & Leisure section (Sunday, July 6). The Times prints all
the news fit to print, but not necessarily all the names. So, for
the record, here are the names of the nine unforgettable Hepburn-Tracy
movies.
WOMAN OF THE YEAR (1942)
KEEPER OF THE FLAME (1943)
WITHOUT
LOVE (1945)
SEA
OF GRASS (1947)
STATE
OF THE UNION (1948)
ADAM'S
RIB (1949)
PAT
AND MIKE (1952)
DESK
SET (1957)
GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (1967)
